How does the X-ray machine work?
2017-10-25 16:34:05

X-ray is a kind of radiation like light or radio waves. X-ray rays pass through most objects, including the body. Once you carefully target a portion of the body being inspected, the X-ray machine produces a small beam of radiation, passing through the body, and recording the image on a photographic film or a special detector.

Different parts of the body absorb x rays to varying degrees. Intensive bone absorbs a lot of radiation, while soft tissue (such as muscle, fat and organ) allows more X-rays to pass through them. As a result, the bones appear white on the x-ray, the soft tissue is gray and the air is black.

In the chest x-ray machine rays, the ribs and spine will absorb a lot of radiation and appear on the image as white or light gray. The lung tissue absorbs a small amount of radiation and looks dark on the image.

Until recently, X-ray radiographs were retained on large slices (very much like a large photographic film). Today, most images are electronically stored in digital files. These stored images are readily available and are often compared with current X-ray images for diagnostic and disease management.
